Orfeu Negro Exhibit

Orfeu Negro Event

From May 10th – May 13th Fotos For Favelas will be part of the Orfeu Negro Event at the FB Gallery in downtown Manhattan.

We are very excited to be part of this special event that will feature Fotos For Favelas photos and works by two other prominent Brazilian and French artists.

There will also be live Brazilian music and refreshments. Volunteers  from Ticún Brasil will also be there to discuss their upcoming volunteer trip to Brazil.

All proceeds from the photography sales go back to Fotos For Favelas and the projects we are working on in the slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Fundraiser for Fotos For Favelas

I recently hosted two fundraisers for Fotos For Favelas. The first fundraiser took place on February 3rd at The Frame Gallery in Downtown Bryan during First Friday, a monthly event in Bryan.  I had over 30 choices of photos available for purchase for $10 each and I also had the books available for purchase. The event featured great live Brazilian jazz,
hors d’oeuvres and wine.  We were a little unlucky with the weather with horrible thunderstorms and rain, but I ended up having more time to speak to everyone that was interested in the project.

The second fundraiser took place on March 2nd at the same location during the Art Walk. The Art Walk featured designs by several local artists that were displayed through downtown Bryan. This time the weather was beautiful and many people came out to participate.

Together the two fundraisers raised over 400 dollars for UMPMRS.

Special thanks to Greta Watkins for letting us host the fundraiser in her store The Frame Gallery and thank you to everyone who bought a book or photo!

The Eagle Article

The College Station newspaper The Eagle wrote a great story on Fotos For Favelas entitled Pictures of Rio. Rosalee Getterman interviewed me by phone for the story asking about my experience living in the favela, the photography class that I taught in the favela and how I was continuing the project from the US.

The article was published in the Sunday issue of The Eagle on January 15th. I woke up that morning exciting to read the article and I read it online, not knowing that they had also published it in the print version. When I got a copy of the newspaper I was excited to see that the article and photos took up nearly the entire first page of the Brazos Life section and was also mentioned on the first page of the newspaper. The article also mentioned the Fundraiser that took place on February 3rd, which was great promotion for the event.

Thanks to The Eagle for the great article!
